Know About Foot Cramping

Cramps do seem to have a special affinity for the calves, but other parts of your body are just as vulnerable. Your neck, back, thighs, and feet can also fall victim to these abnormal, agonizing muscle contractions. A whole host of factors have been linked to the onset of cramps. Although the real reason cramps occur is not completely known, but researchers have noticed feet tend to cramp after a person has done athletic activity -- particularly if it's new activity -- and/or when the individual is dehydrated.

In order to prevent foot cramping, dancers should be drinking water consistently throughout the day. Eating foods high in potassium, like bananas and peanut butter will help increase the levels of this mineral in your body and re-regulate your body chemistry. Cramps occur more often in older people than in younger people and some of them may be caused by certain drugs with diuretic effects. If your cramps are frequent and extraordinarily painful, check with your healthcare provider if one of your medications could be the cause of them.

If you have gotten a cramp due to working out too much, use an ice pack immediately, over the area where you can feel the most pain. In case the cramp is too severe and causes extreme pain, using heat over it thrice a day is also a good idea to reduce the pain. Another common foot problem seen in pregnancy is flat feet. This condition is seen later in pregnancy due to hormones which begin to relax the body's ligaments to prepare the birth canal for delivery. The pelvic bones need to become more flexible to allow this to happen, and the ligaments that hold the bones together must loosen.

There is a number of prescription drugs used to treat these symptoms. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is one way to treat these symptoms. Replacement hormones consist of synthetic estrogen, and or, progestin. Instead try this - keep your body upright, put one leg out in font of the other with the knee bent and the other leg back with the knee straight - it's the same leg position as if you were leaning against a tree or post, except keep your body upright rather than leaning forward. Two things you can do to prevent painful leg muscle cramping is to drink enough water and to follow a proper and balanced diet. You must stay hydrated and you must provide your body with essential vitamins, nutrients, minerals, and electrolytes if you want to avoid having leg cramps.
